John Emery Numbered Bonefish/Permit Fly Reel

Available for sale is a MINT JOHN EMERY Numbered (# 00053) Black satin Anodized Bonefish Fly reel, anti-reverse, very similar to the SEAMASTER Anti-Reverse fly reel or the Elnatti fly reel of Belgium Germany , set for RIGHT HAND WIND, wit a black ebonite crank handle with counter balancing weight, with perforated spool 3 3/4" wide, with a smooth black foot, anodized throughout so as to be appropriately usable for salt water fly fishing. The perforated spool is 7/8" wide and 1" deep, which would accommodate about 250 yards of 20 pound micron backing, plus a 7-9 WF fly line plus leader with cloth purple bag. It is engraved on the rear "JOHN EMERY # 00053". The Mint reel would accommodate a 9 foot 12 weight tarpon rod in perfect balance.

John Emery was a fabled Tarpon and Bonefish guide in the Florida Keys, usually out of Bud & Mary's Marina" of Marathon Florida, where on a good day, at sunrise, you could arrange for him to guide you to where he would always find schooling bonefish so spectacular that it was just a thrill to see such swimming formations of large bonefish and perhaps a Permit.

John Emery made a very limited number of these bonefish reels (and tarpon reels - see John Emery Tarpon listing on this website. Most of the tarpon and bonefish guides treasured his reels because of the very smooth drag, the excellent black anodizing, and it's very durability and size to handle large permit and bonefish as the reel had very ample capacity. Unfortunately, he died of skin cancer. We understand that his children tried to continue making reels after their father's demise, until they went off to college. This reel and the companion tarpon reel came from his personal collection, acquired from his widow who was able to make another mortgage payment with the proceeds of the sale of his personal reels. We cannot locate a supply and fear that it is now extinct (?). This reel has a permanent cork drag (just very similar to the Seamaster anti-reverse tarpon fly reel). The reel is very well made and difficult to buy from the Florida Keys guides who still fish them and will simply NOT part with them. This reel is MINT, never got wet, never was on a rod, never was lined, never saw the sun.

The reel is about 1982 vintage, never got wet, never mounted on a rod, never went fishin', never....!

For that fisher person who thinks he has it all, this is the rarest and best fly reel money can buy!
